THE PODCAST
On "leaky gut" and "leaky skin": We have a thick layer of mucous that should be lining the entire GI tract, keeping bad things out of the blood stream. And when that gets compromised, the things that don't belong their leak through into the bloodstream and it kicks off all this inflammation. The same thing happens with leaky skin. So if you think of a patient with eczema, it's like red, broken, rashy skin. The skin barrier is completely broken, the opposite of a healthy, intact skin barrier, and now things can get through. So basically the skin is supposed to be a barrier. That's its major job... Keep stuff in like blood and water, and keep stuff out. When we've got those rashes it's easy for things to penetrate. What we see particularly in infants is that things like food proteins or even allergens from the environment get into the blood, and because the skin is an outward facing organ, we have a very robust immune system.
