THE PODCAST
When we're looking at autoimmune diseases, we're looking for the way the body is responding to itself, so its own antigens. Our body normally responds to things outside of us and if you get a bacteria, your immune system tries to react to it. But it's your body actually reacting to itself. An overactive immune system. And it's reacting when it's not meant to be reacting. It's kind of similar to allergies. That's why when people have allergies I also look at autoimmunity as almost concurrent conditions all the time. Autoimmune, especially when it comes to Hashimoto's, your thyroid is attacking itself. There's generally inflammation in the thyroid. You can have Hypothyroidism without having inflammation. You can just have not enough hormones because you don't have the right nutrients. When someone has Hashimoto's, and I've seen this a lot recently, your thyroid actually looks overactive, but they've got all the symptoms of underactive thyroid, and when they look at antibodies, they have the antibodies for Hashimoto's. So yes, you can have an overactive thyroid and look like an overactive thyroid, and you can have symptoms of an underactive thyroid, and that is such classic Hashimoto's.
