THE PODCAST
On fat adaptation: We're thinking about the primary fuel that our metabolism uses. So we've got a couple of choices. We can burn sugar, which most of us do, a lot of western cultures do. And the challenge we have with that is that for some people, especially those that start to develop greater carbohydrate intolerance or insulin resistance as they age, they don't feel so great with a sugar burning metabolism. They have that blood sugar rollercoaster which is that desire to need to eat every couple of hours, which often leads to poor food choices, like more carbohydrates to give you energy, it's "3:30-itis" where you crash and burn in the afternoon and need sugar or a nap or more coffee. And often it's weight gain every year as well, which is a side effect of burning sugar, which means your body stores more fat and it's hard to lose weight. Whereas what we want is the opposite. If we can access fat, then we can have unlimited energy, so thousands or hundreds of thousands of calories, depending on our percentage body fat, and day to day we experience blood sugar control, craving control, nice stable energy, good cognitive function, concentration, but I love the long term benefits as well. We know that fat is naturally anti-inflammatory, so if we think of sugar as inflammatory, then clearly we have that link to lifestyle chronic diseases which are avoidable. And then we have fat as anti-inflammatory and it can really create optimal health long term, and allow us to avoid these lifestyle diseases. I like the term "metabolic efficiency" because it means you can do both.
