THE PODCAST
There's the developmental programming which is driven in part by the infant microbiome but also by the many other components in breast milk, which really are just sending messages to that baby's body around how to develop. And this will be affecting their metabolic health, their tendency to be resistant to diabetes or less likely to be overweight, be helping to develop their immune health and also potentially their cognitive health. So when we look at the data around risk and populations in more affluent countries which we might relate to more, we see early introduction of solids for the 6 months. The areas with the strongest data are increased susceptibility to infection. So we see, even in babies in richer countries receiving solids earlier, they're more likely to get respiratory tract infections. And they're more likely to get gastrointestinal infections."
